There are easier ways to spice up your life than being an apprentice fire sword-swallower, showing up with a pepper spray or telling your mother-in-law she’s wrong. Stay out of trouble with today’s Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of Indonesian halal cuisine at Warung Lele Restaurant.

Jammed elbow-to-elbow with spicy, satiety-seekers, Warug Lele is the ideal spot for those interested in authentic, tongue-tingling action. Feast on a riveting range of Indonesian dishes, designed to be shared – or fought over. Stake your claim on juicy chunks of sticky sweet marinated BBQ chicken (ayam bakar bumbu santan, $8) or row over succulent sliced dry beef rending (sapi lapis Surabaya, $8.50). Sink your chompers into the day’s freshest cash with spicy sambal prawns (udang sambal, $12) and chewy squid doused with padang chili or sweet BBQ sauce (cumi sambal or cumi bakar, $11). Keep tastebuds guessing with the K.O combo of crunch and intense heat with deep-fried gurame fish (gurame goring sambal, $30) or tone down the temperature with a balinese fried patin fish in sweet and spicy sauce (lele sambal mata, $26).

Make your momma proud by chowing down on greens – Warung Lele keeps them fresh, crunchy and varied with kangkong sambal belacan ($7.50) and baby kalian with oyster sauce (kalian tiram, $7.50). Leave room for a calorie-heaving roster of desserts – a cloyingly sweet bowl of cendol ($2.50), the coconut heaven of onde-onde ($2.20), or a colourful mixed bag of kueh ($2) will soothe any burning bellies.

Reviews:

Appointed Official Restaurant for Megawarnaria in 2004, an annual charity event hosted by Media Corp; featured on Selamat Pagi Singapura in 2005 and Suria Segar in 2006, both Malay language TV programs.

“Padang style curry chicken - close decision, but yes this is slightly better than its Ayam Opor counterpart from Sabar Menanti. Fragrant curry with just enough chillies to make it a little bit spicier. Chicken was wonderfully tender too….Kangkong vegetable stir-fried with sambal belacan - I think the vegetable dishes were more satisfying than many of the other dishes we had, and with good reason. They were fresh, sweet and in this case, spicy. Yums.”The Simplest Aphrodisiac Blog review

“We went to Warung Lele for lunch, an Indonesian restaurant that used to be at Kandahar Street.  It's now at 8 Shenton Way and it's perpetually packed at lunch. Service is efficient and business is brisk. The restaurant is relatively bare, minimal, no-fuss, almost clinical, with tables jammed so close, if not for the very boisterous noise level of the small-ish space, you can practically hear the next table's conversation without even trying to eavesdrop. Food is reasonable and quite fair. We liked it.” - The Hungry Bunnie Blog review

“We started off with Sate Ayam ($7.50 for 6 sticks), Jakarta skewered marinated chicken served with homemade peanut sauce. This was very good, thick chunky pieces of juicy chicken meat that was tender, and coated with a sticky sweet sauce that was caramelised and smoky from the grill. The Ayam Bakar Bumbu Santan ($7.50) cilandak homemade marinated BBQ chicken, drenched in a thick, paste-like sambal, was another great dish. Chicken was char-grilled so it had that smoky texture and flavour, but retained its juices. The Sayur Lodeh ($7) with cabbage, long beans, carrot, firm beancurd and young jackfruit in a coconut gravy was rich, creamy and full-bodied. Perfect for ladling oodles of it onto steaming hot white rice.” - Food Buzz Blog review
