The Hotel

Like a squad of vigilant soldiers, a row of seemingly vintage guns line a wall of the stately 1861 Bar in the opulent The Luang Say Residence, observing the bustling activity emanating from the room as they might have done before many years ago. 





Constructed in 2011, the small luxury boutique resort was conceptualized as a luxurious outpost of the Explorateurs glory days. Today, the classic allure of its French colonial architecture and interiors accommodate spirited travellers to preserve that civil spirit in the heart of downtown Luang Prabang. 





After checking in at the lobby—a formal seating area with an ornate couch as its centrepiece—guests are escorted to a Pioneer Suite, a modern enclave that harbors a living space filled with modern amenities and a décor that nods to bygone French colonial eras.





Each chamber is anchored by a king bed, or twin queen bed, creating a tranquil retreat for guests. In addition to period pieces, quaint window dressings, and a private bathroom, the Pioneer Suites also offer complimentary WiFi and cable TV.



Guests can sample a tempting selection of regional dishes from Laos and other countries in South East Asia at the hotel's main dining venue, La Belle Epoque. We stayed at Luang Say Residence over New Years, and we loved it. The colonial design is amazingly well done - its all brand new but the place feels like it has a century of history. Suites are immaculate and well equipped, and the gardens and pool areas are both beautiful. The staff (who outnumber guests even when the hotel is full) were incredibly helpful and welcoming. Food, whilst very expensive by Luang Prabang standards, was also excellent - great eggs benedict for breakfast and quality French for dinner. There's also a lovely bar area with a roaring open fire in the evening. Plus they provide free bicycles too, which is a great way to explore the fascinating town.
