The experience

Singapore Zoo

Tracing its roots to 1973, this 26-hectare park’s charms – evidenced by a nine-year winning streak in the Best Leisure Attraction category of the Singapore Tourism awards – comes courtesy of more than 2,800 creatures scattered throughout animal habitats. Guided trams shuttle guests to the savannahs of Wild Africa, its grassy plains home to fearsome lions, rhinoceroses, and zebras, as the Hamadryas baboons await adoring glances at the Great Rift of Ethiopia. Underwater galleries offer the chance to espy gargantuan estuarine crocodiles, pygmy hippos, and darling otter families, while landbound mammals like the giraffe receive their own elevated viewing platforms.

Immersive experiences beckon at the Fragile Forest, where wanderers get up close and personal with shy mousedeer and flying foxes on an open sundeck. Further encounters abound at the Jungle Breakfast with Wildlife experience, a novel escapade that lets hungry humans dine on international buffet comestibles in the company of free-ranging orang utans. Pachyderm counterparts take up the foodie theme with token feeding sessions at the Elephants Work and Play show, where the large creatures show off their intelligence and strength by playing dead, stealing snacks, moving heavy logs, and cheekily spraying onlookers with a trunk full of water.

River Safari

Settling in between the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari, this brainchild of the Wildlife Reserves recreates some of the most celebrated rivers within its serpentine channels, while acting as a home to the world’s largest freshwater aquarium. Beaver dwellings dot the landscape of the Mississippi, along with brief sightings of the region’s rare paddle fish and alligator gar, before visitors drift down to the Congo River, where humongous pufferfish rule the waters. African journeys continue at the Nile River, fiercely guarded by sharp-toothed tigerfish and bichir, a sharp contrast from the odd looks of the Ganges’ softshell turtle and goonch catfish.

Gliding past massive stingrays in Mekong and the Yangtze River’s giant salamanders, cameras turn to capture glimpses of Kai and Kai and Jia Jia at the Giant Panda Forest, along with the adorable primates of Squirrel Monkey Forest. Vessels bear eager passengers down the Safari Cruise and Amazon River Quest tracts, the latter offering close up views of tropical rainforest swathes, complete with chattering spider monkeys, Brazilian tapirs, and a blood-curdling jaunt through the gloomy depths of jaguar caves. Replications of the area’s flooded jungles draw curious onlookers into the habitat of the arapaima and river otter, whetting their appetite for Szechuan cuisine and panda-themed delectables at the Mama Panda Kitchen.
