Hotel at a glance

Envisioned by Singaporean construction maven Koh Tiat Meng as a nearby retreat for fellow countrymen, this Balinese-style village enclave strays from grassy knolls to flow onto the pale sands of quiet shorelines. Amidst shallow cliffs that guard their charges from the elements, clusters of holiday cottages root around shingled pathways, polished teak bodies settled mere moments from beach-front siblings who dip slender stilts into South China Sea waters. Simple pleasures stretch out reverie-filled days, where families squabble over mahjong boards or billiard games, ocean blues provide the perfect training grounds for budding swimmers, and fishing trips yield armfuls of fresh squid for night-time supping around the barbecue pit.

  • Contemplate spiritual significance as you study the beatific countenance of Kwan Im, a 23-metre high likeness of the Goddess of Mercy reposing gracefully in ivory robes as she watches over the resort from her hillside perch.
  • Harmonise with island lifestyles and partake in the just-caught marine bounty that makes up the mainstay of the hotel’s restaurant, where seafood dishes are chewed thoughtfully over a staring contest with the fried garoupa.
  • Reward tired souls with soothing massages and foot reflexology appointments at the SPA sanctuary.
  • Wander down the coastline during dawn and dusk, where views of Singapore glitter from across the vast drink, or watch the ‘Lion City’ from a different vantage point, seeking a quiet moment of solitude at the pavilion on the bluffs whilst admiring the softly rolling tide.

Batam, Indonesia: What to see and do

Located approximately 20 kilometres away from Singapore, Batam is part of the Riau Archipelago that stretches from the east of Sumatra to the south of Singapore, providing travellers with a quick weekend getaway within the convenience of the city. The island is a free trade zone teeming with duty-free shopping opportunities, and many of its malls are located in Nagoya, the main commercial district in Batam. Nagoya Hill is the crowning glory of the town, a three-storey development that has a mix of retail shopping, dining outlets, and a cinema on the top floor. Look out for international brands like Ralph Lauren, Ann Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger, as well as a number of shops selling local goods such as batik fabric, handicrafts, and kueh lapis.

You can hire a taxi to drive you around the island, which also boasts six golf courses, tropical beaches with watersports, and the Batam Miniature Park that features replicas of traditional houses unique to different provinces within Indonesia. Keep an eye out for the iconic structure of the Barelang Bridges that connect Batam to its neighbouring islands, a popular place for sightseeing and photography. After a day of exploration, refuel at one of the waterfront restaurants perched on stilts – also known as kelong – that serve fresh seafood like chilli crabs, sweet and sour king prawns, and gong gong, a type of sea snail typically found around the waters of the Riau Archipelago, accompanied by sips of refreshing coconut water straight from the fruit.

  • Beachfront hotel designed to resemble a Balinese village.
  • Pay obeisance at the resort’s own 23-metre high statue of the Kwan Im, then reward selves with fresh seafood at the seaview restaurant.
  • Rent a jet-ski for voyages through the balmy brine, hunt down bargains at the Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall, or ponder the island’s spiritual side at the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple.
