Genting Highlands: What to see and do

Part of the Titiwangsa Range that forms the backbone of Peninsular Malaysia, the hilltop resort was born out of the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong’s vision to build a retreat close to Kuala Lumpur, where city dwellers may go for a holiday to escape the tropical heat and have fun. It is accessible via a hillside route that branches off from the Karak Highway, a journey that takes about an hour from Kuala Lumpur. If you prefer not to drive, there are buses that travel to and from Genting Highlands on a daily basis, or you can skip the windy roads halfway at Gohtong Jaya, and continue the rest of the way on the Genting Skyway Cable Car. The scenic ride takes you past vistas of green valleys and puffs of mist clinging to undulating hills, covered by the blue canopy of the sky stretching in all directions.

At the peak, a city of entertainment awaits; First World Plaza is a shopping centre with over 40 retail outlets and more than 25 restaurants like Giordano, Diesel, Adidas, Starbucks, McDonald’s, and more. The establishment also houses leisure outlets like a karaoke centre, bowling centre, and cinema, as well as Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, an exhibition of some of the world’s curiosities, and Haunted Adventure, a near total darkness walk filled with scares and thrills. Adults (over 21 in age) may visit the casino to try their luck at blackjack, roulette, baccarat, or the slots machine, while children can spend their day at the winter wonderland of SnowWorld, arcade, or indoor theme park. The outdoor theme park and selected rides at the indoor park are closed for construction works, and will be unveiled in 2016 at the debut of the 20th Century Fox World theme park.

The Arena of Stars is a 45,000 square feet amphitheatre where international musicians, renowned acts, and award ceremonies have staged their show, including the likes of Michael Learns to Rock, Kitaro, and Boyz II Men. Before you conclude your trip, make a 10-minute drive down the mountain to the Chin Swee Caves Temple, a pagoda that honours Master Chin Swee. It is worth visiting for its traditional carvings and colourful ornamentation, and to see the giant stone statues of Buddha and Kuan Yin against the hilly background.

  • One of the world’s largest hotels with a tropical rainforest at its entrance and a Spanish courtyard lobby.
  • Adjoined to First World Plaza, with 500,000 square feet of indoor theme park, retail outlets and eateries.
  • Shop for over 90 fashion labels and feast on a variety of cuisines at the restaurants and cafes.
